HOW CAN WE BUILD THE
PUBLIC HEALTH OF WAYNE COUNTY

Do you have teenagers at home, know a teenager or are a teen now? Well then we’ve got something for you!

NOTE: The esssay contest has changed from prior years. Instead of just focusing on Abstinence it has been expanded to cover many public health issues. They must focus on one of the following: abstinence, chronic disease, mental health, health care cost or environmental health.

The essay contest is sponsored by the Wayne County Board of Health in partnership with the Wayne County Health Department and the Wayne Council on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention. All 9th –12th grade Wayne County students (public, private, or home schooled) are eligible to participate in this essay contest.

Here is some additional information that will help you enter the essay contest.

WHAT ARE THE GUIDELINES FOR THE CONTEST?

    Essay Topic – Please submit an essay with a title in your own words on a public health issue in our county and provide a possible solution. This essay must be centered around one of the following topics: abstinence, chronic disease, mental health, health care cost or environmental health. Examples of these could include: intimate partner violence, suicide prevention, sexuality and sexual health, tattoo safety etc.). Support your essay with who you believe should help resolve it, facts and research (with at least 3 from scholarly sources).

    Word limit – No more than 1500 words

    FormatEssay must be typed in black ink.
    Essay should be double spaced on 8 ½ x 11” paper with a 12pt. font and 1" margins.

    Eligibility – Contest is open to all currently enrolled Wayne County high school students (public, private and home schooled). Guidelines have to be followed to remain eligible. Finalist must develop a presentation and present at the Essay Scholarship Ceremony on June 13, 2017 at 7:00pm at Wayne County Public Library.

    Entry form and essay – Entry form should accompany the essay. The only personal (identifiable) information to appear on your essay are the last four digits of your social security #. These digits should appear in the header section of each page of the essay.

    1st place: $1,000 Scholarship
                      $75 Gift Card
    2nd place: $500 Scholarship
                      $50 Gift Card
    3rd place: $300 Scholarship
                      $50 Gift Card

WHEN IS THE ENTRY DEADLINE?

Friday, May 12, 2017 at 6:00pm. Essays and completed entry form must be mailed (postmarked NO LATER than May 12, 2017) or submitted to the address listed below:
